Lefdal Mine Datacenter: an ownership deal in limbo, and Norway's most powerful supercomputer inside it

PRE-REVIEW DRAFT — right of reply sent 21 August 2026, pending until 4 September 2026

Bottom line: Lefdal’s ownership story is foreign and currently mid-transition — Ameriprise/Columbia Threadneedle handing off to the UK’s 3i Infrastructure, signed but not closed. That’s a real Sovereign-axis exposure. It sits alongside a genuinely important counterweight: Lefdal physically hosts Olivia, Norway’s most powerful supercomputer, and the NIRD national storage system, under Sigma2, Norway’s national HPC organization.

What checks out

Signed, not closed — two independent sources agree

3i Infrastructure plc (UK-listed) agreed to acquire a majority stake (~€300M, announced March 2026) from Columbia Threadneedle’s ESIF fund (itself chained to Ameriprise, US), reported as “expected to complete summer 2026.” As of this assessment, Lefdal’s own ownership page still names Columbia Threadneedle (66.67%) and Rittal/Friedhelm Loh (Germany) as the main shareholders — no mention of 3i.

A second, independent source agrees: the Brønnøysundregistrene registry shows Erif Fjord Holdings AS (org. 924 446 226, the direct parent holding 66.667% of Lefdal Mine Datacenter AS) is itself 100% owned by “Columbia Threadneedle Erif Holdings,” with no 3i mention. This is consistent with the deal not having closed — though not conclusive, since a change of control executed at an upstream foreign holding level wouldn’t necessarily register in Norwegian company data at all. Our primary right-of-reply question to Lefdal is simply: has the 3i transaction closed, and if so, when?

The sovereignty counterweight

Sigma2 — Norway’s national HPC organization — selected Lefdal as its national data centre provider. Olivia, Norway’s most powerful supercomputer, is installed and inaugurated at Lefdal, alongside the NIRD national storage system (operational since 2022). Hosting national research infrastructure is a material Sovereign-axis data point in its own right — a form of operational entanglement with the Norwegian state that exists independently of who holds the equity, and arguably offsets some of the foreign-ownership exposure in scoring. We’ve asked Lefdal directly to describe the operational-control model and data-residency terms attached to the Sigma2 arrangement.

Confidence

PUE: B (semi-primary, minority-owner-cited, not independently audited). WUE: A (operator-stated, structural, verifiable in principle). That the 3i deal is signed-but-not-closed: A (two independent sources agree, though see the caveat above on upstream visibility). Sigma2/Olivia/NIRD hosting: A (named, dated, sourced to Sigma2’s own site). Right of reply was sent to Lefdal (Mats Andersson, cc [email protected]) on 21 August 2026, asking both about deal closure and the Sigma2 operational model; the response window is open until 4 September 2026.
